Retinoids, Honestly

Dr. Elias Renner

6 min read

If you could keep only one active in your routine, it should almost certainly be a retinoid. Few ingredients have the depth of evidence behind them: decades of studies showing improvements in fine lines, tone, texture and the underlying architecture of the skin itself.

But evidence is not the same as ease. Most people who abandon retinoids do so in the first month, when the skin flushes, flakes and rebels. The mistake is almost always the same — too much, too soon, on a barrier that was never given time to adapt.

Redness is not the retinoid working. It is your barrier asking for patience.

Start low, go slow

Twice a week, a pea-sized amount, over a moisturised face. That is the entire secret. Increase frequency only when your skin is calm, and never chase irritation as though it were progress. Redness is not the retinoid working. It is the barrier asking for patience.

Give it three months before you judge the results, and a year before you judge the ingredient. Skin is built in seasons, and the retinoid is a long, quiet conversation — not a quick one.
